Historical Commission · Meeting of August 10, 2026
WALTHAM — The Waltham Historical Commission split 3-2 against waiving a one-year demolition delay for a 140-year-old house at 63 Greenwood Lane, while unanimously clearing demolition of a fire-damaged building at 893-897 Main Street. Chairman Mort Isaacson argued the Greenwood Lane house's ties to the Worcester and O'Hara families made it historically significant; attorney Richard LeClair, representing applicant Frank Valentino, called it structurally unsound and asked that the delay's start date be moved back to April 21, 2026, when the application was filed, citing Building Department holdups. Commissioner Sean Wilson warned about "setting a precedent" given repeated department delays, and the commission voted 5-0 to have Isaacson consult Waltham's Law Department.
Separately, the commission voted 5-0 to allow demolition of the condemned, fire-damaged Main Street building, where owner Sean Zhang's restaurant has been closed nine months; the replacement plan adds four residential units and five parking spaces. The commission also voted 5-0 to authorize up to $1,000 for reprinting history brochures and 5-0 to oppose proposed federal Section 106 review changes.
