The Town of Waltham announced Oct. 22 that its annual Leaf Vacuum Program will begin the week of Oct. 26 for residents whose regular trash and recycling pickup falls on Monday.

The program lets residents place loose leaves in a pile at the curb to be collected once during their scheduled week, separate from the curbside bagged yard waste pickup that runs from April into December. The town said the vacuum program should be used to supplement the established yard waste collection, not replace it.

Residents are asked to put leaves at the curb before the Monday of their scheduled week and to keep piles clear of storm drains. Only leaves will be collected; sticks, brush, garden refuse and other waste will not be picked up. The town noted leaves may not be collected on a resident's usual trash and recycling day, but will be collected once during the assigned week.

The collection schedule follows each street's regular weekday pickup. Residents with Tuesday pickup will have leaf vacuuming the week of Nov. 2 through Nov. 6; Wednesday pickup residents the week of Nov. 9 through Nov. 13; Thursday pickup residents the week of Nov. 16 through Nov. 20; and Friday pickup residents the week of Nov. 23 through Nov. 27.

The town said the leaf vacuuming program runs on a rotating schedule each year and is subject to change or halting due to weather. Additional pickup rounds are not guaranteed and depend on weather conditions.
