Waltham's Zoning Board of Appeals approved a residential variance and a food pantry appeal on May 19, voting unanimously on both decisions. The board granted a variance to Ethan Harris to build a three-story residential addition at 14 Villa Road despite zoning limits allowing only 2.5 stories; lot coverage will reach 20 percent from 14 percent, below the 25 percent maximum. The board also granted an appeal by Healthy Waltham, Inc., a 501(c)(3) food pantry, challenging a building inspector's decision and approved placement of a temporary 10-foot by 12-foot cooler at 123 Felton Street in the Commercial district.

Executive Director BJ Osuagwu testified the organization expects five to ten appointments per hour, with clients using street parking or public transportation; the cooler supports the pantry's nutrition education and food assistance mission.
