Waltham Zoning Board voted unanimously to allow a housing conversion case to withdraw and proceed to City Council approval instead.
Zoning Board of Appeals · Meeting of May 12, 2026
Waltham Zoning Board voted unanimously to allow a housing conversion case to withdraw and proceed to City Council approval instead. Petitioner Paul Yu sought to convert vacant office space at 719-723 Main Street into four residential apartments with five parking spaces, arguing the project required only a City Council special permit for density and not ZBA relief because the building's setback nonconformities predated current zoning. Adjacent property owner Fred Kimberk challenged the applicant's legal analysis and expressed concern that a ZBA statement would improperly influence the City Council.
The board, led by Vice-Chair Mark A. Hickernell, allowed withdrawal without prejudice, sending the density question to the City Council for special permit consideration.
