Council transfers Lawrence School property to Recreation

City Council · Meeting of February 2, 2026

Waltham transfers major school property to Recreation Department in a unanimous vote. The City Council voted 15-0 to transfer the Lawrence School building at 258 Trapelo Road to the Recreation Department, potentially enabling mixed-use development with housing and ice skating rinks. Councillor LaCava, who had tabled the matter in September, brought it back for a vote and then tabled it again pending further proposals from the Mayor.

During discussion, council members emphasized the importance of ice rink access for the city's youth hockey programs and raised concerns about parking impacts, wetlands issues, and the city's rights regarding the Veterans Rink facility. The Mayor was asked to present updated development options for the council's consideration.
