Council refers Felton Street overlay bid to committee
City Council Part 1 · Meeting of September 28, 2026
Waltham council hears Felton Street overlay bid, sends it to committee with no opposition. Attorney Michael Connors, representing Union Avenue LLC and 181 Felton Street Realty Trust, asked the council and Board of Survey and Planning to extend the Riverfront Overlay District over an 18,567-square-foot Residence C portion of the 0.7-acre parcel. Seven residents rose in favor during a standing count and none opposed.
Board member Brian Maroney pushed back, warning the change "opens it up for different development that's not residential" on a lot now zoned residential. One board member who served when the overlay was created in 1990 questioned how "affordable" resulting development would really be. The council referred the matter to its Ordinance and Rules Committee, with a continued joint public hearing set for October 7 at the Government Center.
