City Council authorizes $79M library renovation, eyes $19M state grant

City Council · Meeting of April 21, 2026

WALTHAM — City Council authorizes $79M library renovation with state grant offset. Library Director Kelly Linehan and OPM Tom Gatzumis of CHA Consulting presented the Waltham Public Library Renovation Project, a $79,050,136 "not to exceed" undertaking potentially offset by a $19 million Massachusetts Public Library Construction Program grant. The Council voted 10 to 1 to authorize the project cost and empower the Mayor to apply for and expend federal and state grants to reduce the city's obligation.

Councillor Hanley requested the Library Building Committee expand a parking plan offering only 17 spaces. The Council separately approved a restrictive covenant for ADA upgrades at Beaverbrook Apartments, 298-324 Grove Street, on an 11-0 vote.
